Formation of the Peace Pole Committee
The Calgary Peace Pole Committee, consisting of representatives from over 40 faith and community groups, cultural associations and interested residents, was formed in April 2007, with a vision to create a permanent symbol for peace in the city of Calgary. The group envisioned the creation of a Peace Pole, which would serve as a constant reminder to all of the importance of working together to maintain a society free from war and violent conflict.
Community groups involved sign a Peace Charter, committing their group to live and work in peaceful ways. This project has drawn hundreds of people together and is intended to last well beyond the creation of the physical pole. Groups will continue to be linked in purpose, friendship and activities.
